As you know, I wasn't born in the United States, but I am an American, and I finally got to see my country. It was quite a trip. I thought my mommy was going to lose her mind! Here's the story...
After getting up in the middle of the night and sitting in the air terminal parking lot for a couple of hours, we found out we couldn't get on the military flight and would have to try the next day. So, the next day, we hauled all our stuff to the terminal once again, and this time we got on a plane here in Sicily - bound for Spain. Unfortunately, we sat on the tarmac for 2 hours before taking off. Mommy was begging Daddy to cancel the trip after I vomited (not spit up... vomited) all over her and myself. We had no clothes to change into, and oooh did we stink! Daddy thought we should stick it out, and so we did.
We finally left Sigonella and landed in Spain 3 hours later. As we were taxiing to the terminal, Daddy saw our connecting flight taking off - 2 hours early and without us! So, we sat in the terminal in Spain for 9 hours. Mommy tried her best to keep me happy while Daddy spent lots of time and effort changing our flight arrangements.
At 11 pm, we got on a C-5 Galaxy. This is a massive cargo plane! It was carrying helicopters as well as my family and 6 Marines. We had to climb a ladder to get to the seating area, where we sat backwards with no windows for the 10 hour flight. It's a good thing it left Spain at bedtime; we were able to sleep most of the flight. It got to be a bit of a bouncy ride as we were refueled mid-flight. The C-5 is really loud, so Mommy and Daddy put plugs in my ears!
Ahhh, US soil!!! We landed in North Carolina at around 3 am and made our way to the local airport to catch a flight to Atlanta and onto Wichita. It took us 33 hours, but we made it! Whew!
